Hi, this is Volen.

I had never drawn or painted anything until the age of 22. I didn’t even doodle…

I just didn’t know about art. It was never a part of my environment and I had never seen anyone do it. When I first tried drawing, after starting a film course, I also found out that I was profoundly untalented. I thought it would be impossible for me to learn. So, naturally, it became an obsession and a personal challenge.

I spent the next several years working every single day on improving my craft and learning from the best. I went through every single course I could find, read every book I could get my hands on and ultimately art has become my vehicle for self-improvement, not just as a practitioner, but as a person. It has taught me more than any other activity I’ve been involved in, some key lessons being discipline, consistency, humbleness and gratitude. It has also taught me about what Carol Dweck calls the growth mindset – which is our infinite ability to improve, so long as we perceive everything as a process that can be worked on, not a gift, personal defect or lack of innate ability. Art has also taught me how to learn, which is a skill I sadly did not manage to master or understand during 15 years of school and university combined.

I’m self-taught, but I can say without a doubt, that art has been my greatest teacher so far. For those on the same path of improvement – I hope to be able to help by sharing my journey on the blog YouTube and sketchbook containing years of work where you can see my progress from a complete beginner. My mission is to help people learn how to learn and to spread the growth mindset to as many people as I can reach.

I currently work out of the UK as a freelance Artist, Concept Designer & Illustrator. I also teach beginner artists via one-on-one mentorships. Please get in touch with any project you could use my help on – inpursuitofart@gmail.com

I have also earned a First Class Degree in Film & Digital Art from Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK.

Thank you very much for stopping by!

That’s like asking if exercising every day would help. The general answer would be yes, but it also depends on what your goal is, what your practice is and if these are well matched. You also have to put in enough time and wait long enough for the results to start showing through. Generally speaking, the more you practice – the better you’ll become. If you don’t practice – there’s 0 chance of improvement…

    Hi there,
I just sat and watched your video about the sum of your honours degree v (relentlessly pursuing that place where YOU put yourself to strategically nourish your path of mastery – as I put it in my art/writing journal.) I feel like I want to either a) kidnap you and force you to teach me (threatening you with post grad work if you refuse) or b) come run alongside you with my cyber easel, watch and copy and become a real pain in your ass, in an older sister type fashion.
You said you were interested in newbies. Well (imagine me standing on a trampoline, jumping up and down, holding a horn announcer, dressed in neon orange ((just in case you can’t see/hear)) screaming “pick me!!! Pick meeeee! ”
Borino life story :41 female, two teenage kids. Previous abusive relationship but nothing can kill my irreducible humour. Last yr diagnosed with awful illness that means I’m in constant pain and every other day so tired I sleep most of it. I have this sense of urgency that I can’t waste anymore time. I’m a writer/poet primarily. Also a beader/jewellery maker-designer/cardmaker/mixed media. I love live breathe the creative. I want ultimately to build up a portfolio of work that nan how’s who I am , who I want to be and what I can do. (Vague hey?) I don’t have the natural skills to draw and paint. I have to work hard to get a likeness but I can. I have a gazillion ideas and to do’s. I can really inspire people with words, can you help me do it in pictures? Please. Teach me to paint and draw properly. I was literally about to enrol on an online fast track lvl 2 cert and foundation dip for 2 years. I can’t get out much cos this damned illness makes me so tired so online is perfect for me. I’ve studied literature at undergraduate level and I was smiling to myself at your comments. Some academics poo poo art, written and visual by applying some framework they probably don’t understand themselves that the original artist was oblivious of and would probably read their thesis and declare it bullshit. Anyway, I’ve said enough for now (ya think!???? He says))
So what say you ;)))))) ?
